History
The island is known as Cabbage Tree Island because of the palms but Monggongbin is also the Bundjalung name for the island. (Richmond Tweed Regional Library & Richmond River Historical Society. 1983).

A village on Cabbage Tree Island about 4 km S of Wardell. Boundaries within the Ballina Council area shown on map GNB3731.
Origin
Name of co-operative was Numbahging for people of the reeds. It has been stated that an Aboriginal man from another area had put the name in writing and had written it incorrectly. Reeds in Bundjalung is Monggongbin and at a meeting the co-operative was renamed Bunjum for cabbage tree palm (Livistona australis).
