History
At the request of the Council of the Shire of Sutherland this area was assigned the name of Kareela on 15 December 1967. It previously was portion of the locality Oyster Bay.
Description
A suburb on the southern shores of Oyster Bay about 3 km NE of Sutherland Railway Station and about 1500 metres east of Jannali Railway Station. Jannali to the west and Sylvania to the east.
Origin
From the aboriginal word Kari-Kari meaning fast. The southerly winds in this area are usually very strong hence Kareela meaning south wind (fast wind)
