Bennelong Point (POINT), NSW Details
History
As early as 1789 Governor Phillip captured a young man named Bennelong who gradually became accustomed to the food and clothing of his white captors. He was killed in a tribal fight in 1813. (Reed 1969).
Description
A point in the Sydney Harbour. Situated approx 1/2 km SE by E of Dawes Pt & approx 3km N by S of Sydney Harbour National Park. This feature is dual named.
Origin
Was once known as Cattle Point because it was originally used for the herding of public stock. But was changed to Bennelong Point after an Aborigine who was the first native to accept civilization. It was known by the aborigines as Jubgalee. (Maritime Services Board Port of Sydney Vol 9 No 2 Sept 1965)
