History

From 1866 to 1930 various publications referred to the area as `Market` Market Reserve` but most commonly as `Market Square`. On 22 January 1996 the Council approved the name `Market Square`.

Description

The remnant area of the site known as Market Square since the middle of the 19th century. The present area is Lot 10 DP 42052 and is bounded on the south by Moore St the west by Dangar St the north by Dumaresq St and on the east by the police station and City Band Room. The original site was set aside in 1869 and covered the larger area of Lot 5 Section 2 of 3a 3r 203/4p and was bounded by Moore Dangar Dumaresque and Faulkner streets.

Approved 1869 dedicated in 1871 as a market siteit has been used for band performances travelling sideshows unsanctioned camping grazing and converted to a dedicated camping and car parking area in 1930. Originally an area of 3a 3r 203/4p (1.57ha) the remnant area is only 7495 sq m.
