History

Earlier the area had been called by the timber getters Purgatory because of the prevalence then of the tick pest.

A village E of Coopers Creek and about 4.5 km SSW of Federal. Boundaries shown on map marked GNB 3744

Origin

Joseph Strong searching for the surveyors peg identifying his property had almost given up hope. When he finally and unexpectedly found the peg he exclaimed Eureka!. From that discovery came the name of hisr property and later the name of the village. (Place Names of the Richmond Region by Richmond-Tweed Library).
