History
The name was conferred by Governor Phillip in honour of Ernest Augustus Duke of Cumberland later King of Hanover at a gathering to celebrate the birthday of his father King George III on 4 June 1788.

A lands administrative division bounded on the North and West by the rivers Hawkesbury and Nepean on the South West and West by the Nepean the Cataract river and a line bearing E 20 degrees S of Bulli on the sea coast which forms the Eastern boundary.
