Kahlil Gibran on Marriage

I remember my mum gave me this in a book from Kahlil Gibran and bookmarked this page just after i got married. Getting more from it even to this day.

Then Almitra spoke again and said, And what of Marriage, master?
      And he answered saying:
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of your be alone,
Even as the strings of the lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.

From The Prophet (Knopf, 1923). This poem is in the public domain.

Thoughts on this poem

I guess as i gain more experience in life, i gather more thoughts about this.

I come back to this line in particular.

"Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls."

How can we make love not a bond. I guess we need to let the ones we love do what makes them happy at their core. We cant use it as an excuse to apply pressure to what they do.

What does the da vinci AI think about Kahlil Gibran and his thoughts on marriage?

Kahlil Gibran is a Lebanese-American writer, poet, and visual artist. He is best known for his book The Prophet, which has been translated into over 40 languages. In his writing, Gibran often explores the theme of love, and in this quote he is talking about marriage as an expression of love.

Gibran believes that marriage is not just a contract between two people, but a sacred union of souls. He sees it as a way for two people to come together and share their lives, their love, and their journey through life. Gibran believes that marriage should be a partnership based on love, trust, and mutual respect. He feels that when two people are married, they become one, and their lives are intertwined.

Gibran's quote about marriage is a beautiful and poetic way of looking at this sacred union. He believes that marriage is a way for two people to come together and share their lives, their love, and their journey through life. Gibran's quote reminds us that marriage is not just a contract between two people, but a sacred union of souls.
