Super Invention Guide For Beginners : runescape

Hi guys! I had to teach invention to myself a few months ago and didn't have a good teacher per say so here's my attempt at a quick guide for invention newbies. I wanted to put everything on one page for you guys. Feel free to bookmark to return to and comment or ask questions in the comment section below. I will cover everything but perks because I still don't quite explain perks. For reference, I am lv 88 Invention and grinded 1-70 or 80 pretty fast after unlocking.

The Basics

The skill is weird in that the experience isn't determined by training methods or what level you are, but what items you use and how you "retrieve" that experience from that item. Also, you get the xp in huge chunks (560k xp for siphoning at level 85 weapon...ish). The xp between levels and total xp at 99 and 120 is also significantly higher than the other skills, but the high xp gain at once sort of levels it out.

What you end up doing is spending half of the time finding the correct components/parts for making invention items which is random and can be frustrating and costly, and the other half is spent in combat or skilling where your augmented item "learns" and accumulates item xp.

The skill can be costly to upkeep (see "Divine Charges" below), but hopefully this guide will inform you on how to best spend your money while training the skill.

Quick Run-down

-Leveling invention involves using augmented items to accumulate item xp. Once the item reaches a certain level, it will no longer give any more invention xp, so it is recommended to siphon or disassemble once it reaches that point.

-Invention xp: Level 10 disassemble (destroy) = same xp as lv 12 siphon.

-Also, getting an item to lv 12 is exactly DOUBLE the time as getting it to lv 10. This comes into play with what method you choose and depends if you can afford to destroy an item, or if you want to keep using the item, but only siphon the xp off.

-The invention xp an item gives also scales with tier. So t60<t70<t80.... etc. [Refer to Rswiki for a chart] (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Item_xp[1]) that lays this out visually (at bottom of page).

The Options For Training

*From level 1-27, I recommend leveling a cheap item (black salamanders are great) and disassembling (destroying) them for xp. From 27-60, you will be able to level items to lv 10, so go all the way up to 10 and disassemble cheap items.

*The full grind begins at level 60. From then on, you will be able to level up items to lv 15. Never go there because invention batch two hasn't come out...always stop at 12 for siphoning or 10 for disassembling.

That being said, you have a few options for training:

  • If you are a rich mofo, just get nox or T92 items to lv 10 and disassemble (destroy) them completely! This is the fastest xp in game.

  • Don't have that kind of money? Neither did I. Next option is doing the same thing, but with cheaper, low reclaim cost items. For weapons these are: Black salamander (Extremely cheap and T70), Royal Crossbow (T80 and around 400k to replace), Sunspear (T78, 600k reclaim), Crystal Halberd (T70, around 300k G.E. price).

*Sunspear (T78) is one reward from River of Blood quest and is amazing for invention because it is easy to replace + cheap, plus it can be used for any combat style. The augmentation stays when you switch too, which is helpful for slayer or whatever when you want to go from range to magic etc..

-For armor: I recommend Ganodermic poncho and leggings. It costs 1.8mil to replace both items but is extremely cheap compared to other T75 armor or higher options.

  • The "Passive" way: getting your best items (that cost mills that you DON'T want to destroy) to lv 12 and then siphoning them. A siphon costs around 280k (but can be made for free). This method involves doing slayer, bossing, or other combat training methods while wearing augmented items.

  • Fishvention or using augmented tools. This is fine if you are a skiller...but very slow compared to methods 1 and 2. Augment a tool, train the skill, siphon/disassemble. Pretty self-explanatory. You can also destroy your tools once they hit lv 10 for faster xp, but can be expensive with dragon hatchet/pickaxe.

u/samgo27[2] says: "Always use skillvention methods for training those skills even if it's not your primary means of training invention. Tools use very low amounts of divine charge, and the perks you can add are well worth the added cost in terms of extra skill xp gained alone."

-If you are looking for fast training invention, I recommend camping at abyss or GWD1 and using AoE effects to attack as many enemies as much. Another option is camping at a boss such as K'ril for fast item xp.

-Another fast method is camping abyssal demons in the Mortanyia Slayer Tower. Make sure to get a contract from the guy outside to get 170K gp per 200 demons killed. This method also tends to make you 3m gp/hr, but requires more attention than the abyss or gwd1. Bring gem bag (upgrade), spring cleaner, penance aura (for camping).

-Item xp scales depending on the type of item too. Two-handed weapons level the quickest, then mainhand weapon/armor, and lastly off-hand weapons.

My recommendation is to quick train invention until you get to an acceptable level (70-80) and then switch to passively training as you level abyss or go bossing with friends.

Blueprints

-Blueprints are researched at an invention bench to unlock new components or discover new items to make. They tend to give decent chunks of xp, so make sure to do them when you have the available inspiration.

-Also important is researching ways to be a more efficient inventor...through junk chance and drain rate reduction blueprints. These are key to wasting less money and spending less for the skill. I'd recommend researching charge drain first because that is ultimately what is most expensive. The junk chance follows as something nice to have when looking for parts.

Disassembling For Components

-Disassembling items is pretty much destroying items and hoping they give you the components you need. There are a few tiers of components/parts: common, uncommon, and rare. Components are used to create items at a workbench. For the most part, you will need additional items such as bars or divine energy along with components to make an invention item.

-To disassemble, simply drag an item from your inventory into the invention symbol next to the bond symbol at the bottom of your inventory. Yes, you can disassemble noted items, so this is recommended.

-Each item has a certain percentage chance to give you parts. You also have a "junk chance" to get...junk. A bronze item has a much higher junk chance than a rune item and so on.

-Generally, you want to find items with the smallest junk chance to get the parts you want. Every category of items will give you the same components, but different items have different junk chances.

*Example:*For powerful components, for example, you can look at [Rs wiki's page] (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Powerful_components[3]). From there, select a cost analysis calculator for a type of item, such as [summoning pouches.] (http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Calculator:Disassembly_by_category/pouches[4]). Then, sort by junk chance (One of the headers for columns).

*The key is to find the item with the lowest junk chance for a reasonable amount of coins. For pouches, I would recommend arctic bear pouches because they only have a 21.9% chance of giving junk when disassembled, but is only 1.239K. So it is highly affordable, with a low chance of giving junk.

-Some items have a 0% junk chance, such as iron titan pouches, but cost a little more (3.8k a pouch).

Last note: even with a 0% junk chance, you are not guaranteed an uncommon or rare component. For all summoning pouches, they have a 40% chance for spiritual parts, 30% chance for crafted parts, and 27% chance for flexible parts. For rare components, pouches have a 3% chance for powerful components.

To sum it up: Lowering the junk chance just means a greater chance of getting usable components.

Weapon and Armor Gizmos

I won't go into perks this guide but you need gizmos to add perks to items that you wear. You put components into a gizmo and roll for a chance at certain perks. It will take several tries to get the good perks you want.

For making gizmos, u/voltsigo[5] says:

  • Hatchets give Bladed parts + Strong components, which are both used to make Weapon Gizmos.

  • Shields give Deflecting parts + Protective components, which are both used to make Armor Gizmos.

Augmentors

These guys are the key to gaining invention xp. You make em, slap em on an item, and the grind begins. If you are siphoning items, you will only need one per item. If you are disassembling, you will have to constantly create more to replace the ones you destroy.

To make an agumentor you need:

How to get each part:

-Base parts- go to burthope and buy 2h, longswords, maces from the weapon sellers on each floor. I normally buy 10 of each type, and mithril and addy for each. That usually gives me enough for 3 augmentors.

-Flexible and Tensile parts- unstrung maple bows or better. Shortbows give Flexible parts, Tensile parts, Dextrous components, and Precise components, which are commonly used materials for manufactured items: * Precise components are used for Tool Gizmos * Dextrous for Equipment Siphons and Fishing rod-o-matics * Flexible and Tensile parts are used for Augmentors

-Powerful components- summoning pouches. I recommend using whatever you train summoning with (preferably blue charm familiar pouches). I used to buy the pouches and disassemble but then i realized I could be getting summoning xp instead of throwing cash away for the parts. If you must buy, do arctic bear pouches (as mentioned above).

-Enhancing- *slayer rings. I cannot stress this enough. You need 300 slayer points to unlock the ability to make them. Otherwise, do empty light orbs, crystal flasks, or lantern lenses.

Making Slayer Rings

-All you need are gold bars and slayer gems, costing around 300 gp each. These also give other components commonly used in manufacturing items:

*35% chance for delicate parts

*30% chance for connector parts (used for mechanized chinchompas and electrified traps)

*30% chance for smooth

*3% chance for precious components (Uncommon: Used to make equipment siphons and perks)

*2% chance for enhancing components (Uncommon: Used for augmentors and perks)

-You will have to make runs from slayer masters (Taverly, Canifis, or Priff) to the bank and back, buying their 300 gem stock.

-Then smith the two items together in a furnace

-Disassemble the rings for parts.

Making Equipment Siphons

-These are used to siphon the xp out of an item without destroying it, and leaving the augmentor in tact.

Items needed:

  • 50 simple parts

  • 5 dextrous components

  • 5 precious components

-Simple parts: buy a sh*tton of maple logs and disassemble (I buy 1,000 for 40k). They are soooo cheap (20 gp a log) and they are also great for parts for divine charges. Some people recommend doing this whenever you bankstand.

-Logs also give Living components, which are used to make Mechanised Chinchompas.

-Dextrous: should get from bows used for parts in augmentors

-Precious: You should get these from slayer rings...otherwise do other jewelry... but slayer rings are best imo.

Making Divine Charges

-Divine charges are what powers your invention experience. Think of it like a battery percentage on a phone or laptop, or gas for a car. Once it hits 0, you no longer gain item xp and your weapon loses its stats for the most part (because it leaves your item in a "broken state"). Your character has a "charge pack" in its toolbelt (once you finish Invention tutorial). From the pack, your items will pull charges and hold item experience.

-To prevent this, add charges when you get close to 30 min or less remaining.

-Yes, they are costly. I tend to buy/ make 15 at a time so I get 2-3 hours with 3 items. This costs 1m-1.5m depending if I buy off ge or partially make myself. I buy 15 so it's not too expensive but also lasts for a bit.

*Pro Tip: You can save 15K a charge by only buying the divine energy and using your own components.

You will need:

  • 100-2000 divine energy (225 incandescent is usually cheapest)

  • 20 simple parts- again, maple logs are bae <3

Other Tips

Arrows give Head and Crafted parts, which are also commonly used for manufactured items. * If you train Fletching by making Broads, Invention provides a use!

Commonly Asked Questions

  1. Do I need to add perks to my armor?

-Nope. They can help with dps or damage reduction though, so they are recommended since you are paying for the charge drains anyway. That being said, higher invention levels tend to have better perks. I didn't use perks til about lv 70.

2) Which method is best?

-Depends on your cash pile. I recommend grinding it out for the first 60-70 levels, and then passively training via slayer or bossing.
